On January 29, 2012, a Canadian jury in Ontario Superior Court found Mohammad Shafia 59, originally from Afghanistan, his second wife Tooba Yahya 42, and son Hamed Shafia 21, each guilty of first-degree murder. The three were sentenced to life in prison for the honour killings of four family members, Shafia’s first wife in a polygamous relationship Rona Amir, along with his three daughters, Zainab 19, Sahar 17, and Geeti Shafia 13-years-old. The four family members were found drowned in their vehicle in the Kingston Mills lock on June 30, 2009. The jury of seven women and five men in Kingston were sequestered for only fifteen hours before they arrived at the verdict, which will imprison the three behind bars without a chance for parole for 25 years. Speaking directly to Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya and their son Hamed Shafia, Judge Robert Maranger said, “It is difficult to conceive of a more heinous, more despicable and more honourless crime. The apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameless murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your twisted notion of honour, a notion of honour that is founded upon the domination and control of women, a sick notion of honour that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.” Well-known author Norma Khouri says honour killings originate from the belief a woman’s virginity is the property of her family, a practice dating back to 1200 B.C.E. under the rule of King Hammurabi of Babylon, best known for his early code of law. Indeed, Judge Maranger is absolutely correct. These killings are a sick and twisted form of honour, bent on subjugating women and converting them to chattel, ipso-facto. And the sooner people in Middle Eastern, South Asian and African cultures leave this ancient and dated practice behind, the better. After all, this is the 21st Century. It’s quite obvious, there is no honour or respect for life in the Shafia family; and there is definitely no honour in honour killings. Today, women in countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and India, are threatened with force to be sold, bartered or swapped in an arranged marriage for something considered of greater value to their family. And if they should choose their own destiny, they are beaten, become a prisoner in their own home, or in worst cases, murdered for the honour of the family by a father, mother, brother, uncle, or even a paid assassin. For years, the liberal left in Canada and the West in general has ignored the practice of honour killings, which has allowed immigrants to migrate to countries like the United States, England and Australia, believing they can continue doing in the West what they did in their homelands without fear of repercussions from local authorities. I hope that idea ended here in Canada with the Shafia trial. I believe the only answer to such practices is tough punishment with the full force of the law; to make clear to any immigrant who plans to migrate here, the Canadian people will judge you harshly in this matter. I trust I can speak for the majority of Canadians on this issue; in the memory of Rona Amir, Zainab, Sahar and Geeta; if you cannot leave behind in your homeland such sick, shameless and despicable, cold-blooded behaviour, then we don’t want you here. Stay where you are, because Canada is too good a country for such cruel barbaric people. Shafia’s lawyer has filed notice to appeal.
